Many students choose engineering as they have the passion for creating something new and are inspired by some great engineers in the history or the current times. Many love subjects such as Mathematics and Science, therefore they know pursuing engineering will give them a better chance to explore the subjects further. Because engineering is the new benchmark. They are mentally made to think in that way because Science students are advice always to go for a job rather than doing something new, that's why most of them end up doing engineering.

I dont think after taking PCM student ended up in Engineering only. The reason why student take engg. degree is because now a days there are so many engg college opened and getting admission is really very easy. and after that if person put 30% also then he could get jobs in MNC.
There are lot of streams which are open after PCM and 12th that we already have seen lots of comments but currently there is very good scope which I personally seeing and feels is Cyber Law courses and CA(charted accountant) Both of the courses you can do and are having very bright future even if you are not the engg.

anjani jha well said, in my opinion before opting for any course students should first decide in which field they wish to build their career and accordingly they may select the best course as per your interest and liking.

yes, there are certain other options besides engineering you can go for an option as your carrer line. As you have choosen the PCM in your +2 therefore you can go for Honour courses after +2 in any of your liking subject, you can also choose a professional course like law directly after your +2. well the easy answer for you will as you have taken Maths as a main subject so you have both other streams like commerce and arts to choose as your career. so dont worry just concentrate on your studies right now and get good marks you have many other options too if you dont go for engineering! All The Best!

Regarding salary, always remember that there are many aspects on which it depends such as size of the organization, profile, qualification, experience, etc so it would be tough to provide you specific detail.
Also, scope and salary depends on you, if you have interest in the field then you may get promoted and enjoy the benefits of getting promoted with increased salary.
