After pursuing engineering you either get a good placement or not , in both the cases there is a situation where you get stagnated at a certain pay grade and position. There are two reasons:
1)As there are large number of engineering graduates passing out every year only few people gets good jobs. So with just engineering degree getting job in the current market is very low. So large number of engineers are forced to do higher studies for better career prospects.
