Banaras Hindu University is one of the eight public universities that the Indian government has named an Institution of Eminence. About 15,000 of the roughly 30,000 students of BHU, the biggest residential university in Asia, live on campus. The main campus of the university spans around1,300 acres, while the south campus covers 2,700 acres. The university is famous for its scholarships and the placements its offers to students. The university is one of the eight public institutions that the Indian government has designated as an Institution of Eminence. BHU has often been referred to by different names throughout the history and present. The university is also noted for its noteworthy alumni who have left a mark across the globe such as Bhupen Hazarika, Ram Manohar Lohia, Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Jagjivan Ram among others.
