Why is India lagging behind in animation and VFX? What future does this field have in India?

No, we don't lag behind at all. Have you seen Bombay Velvet? Many outdoor shots in the film are complete VFX. Here are some pictures worth observing. Animation studio was Prana Studios. The main shot of Bombay Velvet: The club around which the film revolves. One last point: VFX doesn't always mean dinosaurs and robot and aliens. The main point of a film should be to make it realistic. That is the sole reason why a fantasy feel-good film like Forrest Gump feels so real. Animation and VFX also serve another purpose. To make things look convincing. To put it simply most of the directors here lack imagination. We have MBA from IIM serving as the head of animation companies, not someone who has been a part of the game. Wrong people at the wrong place controlling the right workforce. Future: Our rich culture is a major advantage for our technicians as they provide fertile ground for imagination, which is essential in this field. If the government too takes an initiative and encourages local talent and content, we could easily turn ourselves into a global VFX and animation hub in the next 10 to 15 years.

Yes, India lagged behind in VFX. As India is under the hand of other country and they don't pay attention for India. So, after independence, India started working in this field and tried to develop in this field. Yes, right now in India, there are very few students who join this field, because students doesn’t know about the career option in this field. This field needs creativity and hard work in which many of them lag behind, which lead to less development of this field. But, since few years many companies came up with good show of VFX, which shows that there is a good scope in future. There are many good movies and advertisements that are made which attract people. This turned up students to join this field. Another is, many college has been established for VFX, Video, sound editing, dubbing and many other purpose which attract student. In future, there is a good scope in this field and India has also started producing such movies and act like Hollywood.
