A person with a degree in MBA in Retail has career prospects in supply chains, exporting houses and departmental stores. Manufacturing companies also recruit retail managers to reach out to the customers directly. Banking, finance and insurance companies also need professional retail managers to bring their products directly to the customer. IT and IT enabled services companies particularly in the field of telecommunication also require large numbers of retail mangers, besides these education and health care industry also absorb a large number of retail managers.

I personally feel that with such an emerging retail market, there are tremendous job opportunities in supply chains, departmental stores, supermarkets, advertising agencies etc. Skilled retail managers are required in manufacturing companies, insurance, banking to convey their commodities directly to the customers. One can work in insurance companies, advertising agencies, banks, airlines, shops, cafes, provision stores, logistic firms etc. So getting specialized in the field will surely help an individual to gain profit and achieve the career goal.

I launched PGDM in Retailing in 2003 as founding Director of International School of Business & Media (ISB&M) had designed and taught the core papers to the students with the expectation of Indian retailing will do great as I was new to Indian environment after 20 years of international career. However, Indian retail companies did not meet the expectations as all owned and managed by typical 'Lalas' who are neither willing to pay reasonably nor do respect a Masters degree holder by allowing sufficient time off for maintaining work life balance. Following several other institutions launched MBA/ PGDM in retailing but none took off as expected due to the industry culture and practices. Till date the trend is continuing and it will never change unless the global retailing giants enter Indian market to compete with Lalas and bring global organized retailing culture and practices in Indian retailing which far below any standards anywhere in the world. Indian malls do not match malls and their retailing standards in any of the Asian nations and Bangladesh malls are far larger and attractive than Indian malls. A very small percentage of Indian crowd shop in malls and mostly people go for free air conditioned walk ways, fast food and cinema . which has to change with the perceptions and culture of consumers and the price and practices of retailers. The politicians do not wish to let 100% FDI in retail sector come in just to protect the interests of the powerful Indian middlemen and Lalas who are their source of political funding and if surprisingly today, the FDI in retailing is approved . then MBA/ PGDM in retail management is going to have a good future in India.

Well MBA in Retail is actually a good specialization especially when malls have become latest destination of buyers and brands are all what they care; price of the product is no longer a matter of concern.
