Because most of the opening in Government sector are for students from mechanical back ground. Mechanical stream always have the highest number of openings in public exams.
second, mechanical field never faces recession. It's only IT industry that faces recession and mechanical does not fall under IT. Mechanical students can pursue career in any field they want, be it mechanical or electronics or computers. A mechanical engineer can go for computer stream but a computer engineer can't pursue mechanical.
that is why mechanical is evergreen.
