NISER uses the score of IIT JAM Biotechnology (BT) to select Integrated MSc-PhD in Biological Sciences. Although they do not have a specific cutoff rank to be directly admitted as well, an extremely high JAM BT rank is required to get shortlisted and subsequently have an interview as this is a very important step in their selection. Ordinarily, the higher the candidate ranks in JAM BT in the top few hundred in the General category, the greater the prospects of this candidate getting an interview call. Selection to the Ph.D. in Biological Sciences at NISER is through fulfilling the education requirement and national exam performances, such as GATE, JEST, GPAT, CSIR NET, or ICMR JRF. These shortlisted candidates have to face a written test and/or interview.

To be eligible for the Ph.D. program, candidates need a Master's degree with 55% marks in related fields. Alternatively, a four-year Bachelor's degree with 75% marks can also be considered. Besides meeting the cut-off marks in the entrance exam, applicants must also score a minimum mark in each subject. Online applications are submitted via the NISER website.
