Are Medicine and Engineering Overhyped as Career Options?
Immediately after 12th standard or even before that students are preparing for medical or engineering entrance. It could be peer pressure or from the parents, medicine and engineering have become celebrity careers. Despite so many other creative fields around students are thinking of only these two ... I am in full agreement with the statement. There are lot of opportunities in the fast changing socio-economic scenario of the world. But still in India the young generation mostly from the middle class families whose first are second generation is in education, have become fetish and feel that the Engineering and Medical education is the only profession which are in tune with their personality. If you go to advanced countries like USA, etc. you will find a different scenario altogether. In the developed countries they prefer Legal education and Legal profession as the first option. The brilliant scholars generally join law or research a...more

INDEED EVEN TODAY THE MOST SOUGHT OUT N PREFERRED VOCATION ARE OF DOCTOR/ENGINEER.
I THINK THERE IS A TREND. FOR SOME YRS MEDICAL WAS AT ITS PEAK N NOW ENGINEERING
THE CHILDREN WHO R NOT INTERESTED IN THE 2 ARE MOSTLY CREATIVE BUDDINGS.
OR MAY BE LESS INCLINED TOWARDS STUDIES. AS THESE 2 R THOUGHT OF HARD GALLOPING STUDY AREA!
N EVEN THE INCLINATION TOWARDS TECH'ies ATTRACTS A PERSON. AS IT WAS NOT THE CASE IN PAST AS TECHNO WORLD WAS YET 2 BE INVENTED.
N EVEN A BETTER STABLE OPINION OF ELDERS IS 2 TAKE BIO/MATHS WITH C&P
ITS BECAUSE OF STARTING PACKAGES WHICH IS OCCASIONALLY PROVIDED BY OTHER STREAMS !
SO IT'S PREFERRED BY STUDENTS 2 REMAIN...more -
yes i do think so.i see many students around me who take up engineering just because their parents say so even if they are not happy.another reason i feel is.lack of awareness. many courses are available nowadays but we hardly know about them.i think along with arts, science, and commerce other courses should be introduced in +2 level itself so that we can know more about them and make decisions from the start itself.

yes d abv mentioned carriers r getting overhyped nowadays n apart frm d reasn of good salary n job opportunities another reasn is dat these fields r gettng more popular nowadays.
as d xperts said earlier counseling should b done not only of d students bt also of their parents.
this will help them to find out that they shld percieve engg, medical or any other courses n dat will also help to reduce unwanted popularity of this fields -
This is true that these two professions are overhyped because the middle class families or families who are first or second generation in education due to lack of proper information and because of these courses 's direct utility to the society, and also due to the immediate monetary returns provided by the courses .Even all those who qualifies for these courses are not always comes out in flying colours and most of the time not professionally successful? Because of the faculty admission process everyone who tries to do these courses got admission directly or indirectly and may not have the ability or the aptitude to put theory into t...more

The rural areas are most effected because the students there hardly know about the broader options and when it comes to decision making of students they hardly have their parents or teachers to support them. Most of these people still think that these are the only two areas where there ward will get respect and money they hardly know anything apart from this. At the starting days it feels good to tell that im doing my MBBS or BE but in the later part of life it only puts stress.
If rural teachers could counsel parents and students then it would help a lot of students. Im from a rural area and so can confidently tell about their thought...more -

2012-02-02 14:10:52it is much more comfortable if the boy gets a seat in medicine or engineering and there is no doubt about it.but, any failure should not be viewed a great human fallacy.there is a place for others also in the world and the roads do not close at a particular point -
Undoubtedly medicine and engineering are the overhyped career options now a days, most of the parents are obsessed about their children becoming either an engineer or a doctor, due to this there is too much burden on students, students are joining the medical coaching and engineering coaching classes form class 9th and 10th.

Well after going through everybody's opinion I would like to say only one thing, that yes these professions might be over hyped but student who is opting for these profession should first think about his own caliber and capabilities which plays the most important role in once career. So, I think it is we who need to change the trend. to extent I would also agree to what Priya said that other professions are not comparable with Medicine & Engineering as these two professions have huge and well established job market.
-
I would not title the two professions as Over Hyped, but definitely these are two most demanded careers. However, one cannot compare these professions to other disciplines as there certainly seems a huge gap in terms of the salaries paid but again it all depends on a professional's performance that would decide his future.

Till the early 1990's only 3 prestigious entrance exams were known to students that were IIT, IIM and UPSC. With the invention of the coaching class culture in metropolitan cities like delhi, mumbai, bengluru, kolkata etc. the children of rich and upper middle class stated joining these classes in huge numbers and today after almost 2 decades sending your child to an engineering, medical or commerce coaching class is a status symbol all over india. This rise of coaching classes has degraded the pattern of studies after class 10th. Till class 10th all students study the same subjects and follow same study pattern. But after 10th some op...more

wel datz true.dese career optionz though pay u a hefty amnt.dey do curb an individual z talent

I think lack of knowledge about other available options is also a bigger factor while deciding a career path, normally student doesnt have appropriate information about available options for their field of interest so ultimately they choose one from all available traditional options. Another factor may be prestige thing as these fields are called prestigious fields in villages and small town where major population of India lives and most of the student comes.
