I would even like to add that PI is something very unpredictable as addressed by Priya because no one can even think of what interviewer might put up. It can be anything and from anywhere across the world. For the same, I would like to say just one thing that one should be confident and relaxed while the interview process and most importantly if you do not know the answer, be true, simply say " I am sorry as I do not know the answer". Trust me this would not create any negative impact rather would leave a positive impression on the recruiter.

Gautam Joshi I agree to you points, that Group discussion is not all about keeping your points, rather students should listen to the views of other member of the group.

Moreover, following are the general question being asked in the PIs. I'd suggest the students to please go through and prepare them before appearing for the interviews:
    1. Tell me about yourself
    2. Why should we choose you over someone else?
    3. Tell us three unique qualities of yours.
    4. What is you aim, vision and goal? (students generally get confused between these three elements)
    5. Who's you role model and why? (students should speak out the truth)
In addition to the above, I'd suggest to AVOID giving fancy answers, as the panel sitting there is not a bunch of fools.
    All the best.

What I've experienced personally is that GD is all about:
    -your knowledge
    -you communication skills
    -way of expressing your views
-your patience to listen to what others say
    While the PI is about:
    -what you've learnt
-your skills to imply your knowledge practically
    -your attitude towards the degree
-your vision clarity(why you're opting for a particular specialization)

In group discussion, mostly the current topics are discussed so it would be advisable for students to keep track of all the current affairs, by reading news papers and magazines.

A group discussion (GD) is a simulated exercise, where you cannot suddenly put up a show, since the evaluators will see through you easily. The first implication is that you should be noticed by the panel; second being your contribution has to be meaningful. You should be able to put forth your arguments logically and prove to be a good communicator at the same time. And also the quality of what you say is definitely more valuable than the quantity.

In a group discussion you need to remember two important things one is that you should be noticed by the panel & secondly your contribution to the discussion has to be meaningful. If, you keep these two things in mind you will never fail in a group discussion. How you can achieve these two things. To get noticed by the panel you need to be assertive, make your chance rather than waiting to get a chance to speak and last but not least ensure that the group hears you. If the group hears you, so will the evaluator. To contribute to the GD you need to be a good communicator should know how to put forth your arguments logically for all this

Group Discussion and personal interview are two important parameters for getting admission to a reputed institute. They show your intra-personal and inter-personal skills. Though some students crack the entrance examinations of MBA with great percentiles, they just stay behind in getting the admissions in reputed institutions because of the GD and PI. So, GD and PI are equally important as the entrance exam.

arun dev Thank You for the support. Well I would like to add three more skills in your mentioned list that together form a key to success in Group Discussion: Persuasive skills, Conceptualizing skills and Problem Solving skills. And as far as PI is concerned, I would suggest students to do their home work well before going for an interview as in be aware of even the minutest detail about both the program and the institute in order to create good impression.

I agree to all expert views,
The basic things usually assessed in GD are,
    • Communication Skills
    • Interpersonal Skills
    • Motivational Skills
    • Team Building Skills
    • Tolerance to Ambiguity
    • Divergent Thinking
    • Listening skills
    • Presentation Skills
    • Analytical / Logical skills
    • Leadership Skills
As quality of a good manager is to
PROVIDE INFORMATION, PROCESS INFORMATION & USE INFORMATION.
So, it's important to assess current strengths in all these areas and accordingly put efforts to strengthen weaknesses.
I request Arvind Joshi245 ji Gautam Joshi to share their valuable views,

Group Discussion is a very critical part of the selection process. The purpose is two fold. The first one is to identify candidates who can work comfortably with a team because all organizations focus on teamwork. The second is to identify candidates with potential leadership qualities. This l enables the organization to groom the employee, as part of succession planning. A candidate should ensure that he maintains a very calm and composed temperament, during the group discussion. This is one quality, which will make him stand out. This is because, it is very difficult to anticipate the area, from which a topic will be given, as in, e

Key factors include humility, patience, objectivity, open-mindedness and an ability to look at things from other people's points of view. It's even about listening attentively to what the other people has to say so as to proactively participate in the discussion. It is always important to remember what your counterpart's last words were, when beginning to rant and rave.
