Well in Architecture the most critical aspect is the environment in which it is studied.
1.in IIT's Architecture is just a department, whereas CEPT ahemdabad and SPA Delhi are architecture schools where only architecture and design based programs are taught.
2. Curriculum wise IIT's are more focused on technical stuff, like building mechanics, function etc, while other architecture schools like SPA's, AoA, JJ and CEPT are more concentrated over design methodology and philosophies of building design.

3. In major Architectural competitions, IIT's usually don't stand a chance. Because all or most of them are like, they gave JEE, didn't get through engineering, so just to get that IIT tag, went for architecture. They never really get the hang of design and art based Architecture.
4. Take top 20 architects in India. I'lll give you some names. Hafeez Contractor, Sanjay Puri, Raj Rewal, BV Doshi, Charles Correa, Achyut Kanvinde, Laurie Baker, Hansmukh Patel, Somaya & Kalappa,Ravindra and Savita Punde, Karan Grover, Romi Khosla, Shahrukh Mistry to name a few. How many are from IITs? None.
