For preparation of JEE Mains and other examinations conducted by CBSE, you need to be very thorough with the syllabus of NCERT of standard 11th and 12th. Apart from that you also need to solve a good number of MCQs from a standard book. -

It is recommended that you can join an engineering coaching institute as it increases the probability of qualifying the entrance examination. These institutions provide a proper guidance to the student. They also take periodic tests for the student to assess his strong and weak zones and the student can focus more on his weak zones.
Though, it isn't mandatory to join those institutes and there are many students who have qualified even without joining any engineering coaching institute, I firmly believe that joining those institutes is recommended.
