I passed my board exams in 2024. Can I give my improvement exam next year (2025) as a private candidate, without giving it this year?

Yes you can give your improvement exam in 2025 as a private candidate without appearing for it in 2024. According to the CBSE rules a candidate who has passed an examination can reappear for improvement of performance in one or more subjects in the succeeding year only. This means you have the option to take the improvement exam in 2025 if you passed your board exams in 2024

To register as a private candidate you'll need to fill out the application form usually available from September to October and submit it along with the required fee. The examination will typically be held in March or April with results declared in May or June
