Cape Breton University is a public university located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. CBU is the only post-secondary and degree-granting institution of higher education in Cape Breton Island. The university was established to provide world-class education to the natives of Cape Breton Island. The CBU was started in 1951 as a satellite campus of St. Francis Xavier University in Cape Breton. Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology (NSEIT) was established on Grand Lake Road in 1968. Then in 1974 NSEIT and Xavier College were merged to form the College of Cape Breton. Finally, on September 23, 2004, the Board of Governors unanimously renamed the institution at Cape Breton University.
