The difficulty level of any exam depends on individual strengths and weaknesses. It's often perceived that the Duolingo English Test is easier than IELTS Exam. Here are some reasons behind this:

    1. Duolingo English Test is shorter than IELTS exam.
    2. Duolingo question difficulty adjust based on your performance of the last answer.
    3. Traditional IELTS format emphasis on academic English.

That's not quite the case, in fact majority people find IELTS more tough than Duolingo English test. The duration of Duolingo is less than IELTS, the former focuses on grammar and vocabulary. While the later tests traditional and deep knowledge of the Language. The school is valid for 2 years which is same as IELTS. Almost all the prestigious universities and colleges accept the Duolingo score.

By a Majority opinion, Duolingo is easier than IELTS and students should go for Duolingo instead of IELTS if their college accepts it . The examination will require less deep understanding and more grammar and vocabulary.

How difficult or easy would one find the Duolingo English Test and International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will depend upon individual factors such as one's familiarity with the test format and content, language skills, and background. The former evaluates a person's language skills in a duration less than that of the IELTS. Adaptive exercises appear in sequence and measure one's speaking, listening, reading and writing potential. On the contrary, IELTS takes more time to complete and is a traditional exam that evaluates one's English language proficiency in the aforementioned four areas.

If you want to study in Canada at Columbia College, you will need an English language test. The preferred tests are IELTS and TOEFL. This undergrad college does not accept Duolingo. In IELTS you would generally need a band score of 6.5 and if you choose to take TOEFL internet-based test, you would need a score of 72.
