Is it necessary to have the knowledge of music for becoming a DJ?

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it), you don't need a lot of deep musical theory or expertise to be a DJ.
Most DJs start out with a genre they are most passionate and familiar listening to. Good DJs have cultivated a skill of listening. Over time they build up a deep sense of rhythm, beats and melody. They just 'get' the sounds and can mix beats even if they are quite different in structure. These DJs have a large 'range' (much like a musician who can play many different instruments or genres).

It depends on what you consider a DJ to be. See, just like every other professional career, being a DJ is quite something you can't brag about to those rich executives because everyone knows that it is mildly difficult to become a DJ. You now don't even have to mix from your ear through the cue out on your headphone, you have the sync button. So, don't get me wrong or offended when I say this but this is true and you know it.
