Is MBBS/Medical an overhyped career option?
Becoming a doctor is one of the most coveted and safe career options of all times. The fact that this career option assures money and respect in the society cannot be denied. However, the immense struggle involved cannot be ignored either. Can’t a person with the same caliber pursuing an enginee... View More

Yes, it is.
Do you know why? Because people just love the 'Dr' tag before their name.
The NEET entrance is so hard and selective just because demand is more, every parent wants to see his/her ward as a doctor. All are just in love with the name not the functionality of the profession.
Nobody cares about the streams of applied medical science and paramedical science like Pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, biotechnology, microbiology, etc., which are equally important and needs the same dedication to learn and qualify.
There are many professions which we common man don't know, but have a better career too. -

8 years agoI am in full agreement with the statement. There are lots of opportunities in the fast changing socio-economic scenario of the world. But still in India the young generation mostly from the middle class families whose first are second generation is in education, have become fetish and feel that the MBBS/7Medical education is the only professions which are in tune with their personality. If you go to advanced countries like USA, etc. you will find a different scenario altogether. In the developed countries they prefer Legal education and Legal profession as the first option. The brilliant scholars generally join law or research as a car...more -
Our society just focusses on a few prominent career options like medical and engineering. There is lot of dedication, hard work and also capital investment (in case you are not reserved category or exceptionally intelligent). The coaching for getting into MBBS is again very tiring and expensive for young kids to handle. The peer and parental pressure also worsens it. No doubt, it's a very respectful job which allows you to save lives and spread happiness but still the cons of the profession are often ignored.

no pain no gain. so work hard to achieve big.no doubt as a doctor your future is secure.u can't have a secure future if u do something else other than doctor ,it's totally a myth .I have seen many people making many times larger money than a doc.if u ask someone that why are they becoming a doctor ,they will reply yu a junk "social service", bull shit . Hardly you find any doctor doing social service . they only want to make money .I am blaming medical profession ,justifying there are many ways of making more money ,but there yu need to do hard labour to earn something big in any sector.

If you are passionate about going for a medical stream, then it is not much relevant if the career option is over hyped or not. You need to work on your caliber as well as have a financial back up, so as to be sure enough that what degree you are going to pursue is worth the effort and money.
I hope this helps. -
If we are planning to go for medicine, then I think even merit list students should have a bank balance of Rs.1 crore because the admission fee for the toppers is not at all affordable and the coaching fees can give you a heart attack.
There is no value given to the brilliant and hardworking students. But I prefer, if we are ready to do hard work, then we can crack everything by our own. -
Medicine if pursued to the highest level is good. But the channel to reach that level is long and hard. Considering that there are various other options for the less committed who can fetch a job after graduation and post graduation. If you are fully committed for becoming a doctor and willing to take the hard path to do justice to the profession then it is the only profession that can give you maximum job satisfaction, apart from recognition and respect by the society.

9 years agoYes, it is an over-hyped career option. Unnecessarily overrated. -
Children should be given career guidance and a chance to choose what THEY want to do and not what the parents want them to become. Indian parents generally think that if there kids become an engineer or doctor they will succeed in life. Thats disastrous. Imagine a wannabe artist pursuing MBBS! The people who are genuinely interested should do it. Others should stay away.

9 years agoThere is no basis to think so. Medicine provides a good footing and the chances of further gains are many more. We can't say that the other fields give the same assurance. -
From my point of view.it is not overhyped yes but some people using it only for there greediness not only medical personal also patients. it is no doubt a good career option along with money, name fame, it provide you to do something for your nation and also for the world.i think all the sector of Medical line should be promoted equally and same platform.all the best

Hi Everyone,
Specializations in the medical field is there at the post graduate level so i think we need to make some amendments in the education at the UG level, so that people can attain specializations at UG level like in engineering , we have computer engineering, mechanical engineering etc.
So , I think MBBS is not an over hyped career option, its just that we are short of options in the medical field -
Hi,
Whenever we think about getting in the medical line, the first thought that strike our mind is MBBS, same does not happen when we talk about engineering . I think yes MBBS is an overhyped career option
