2 S O 2 ( g ) + O 2 ( g ) 2 S O 3 ( g )

In a equilibrium mixture, the partial pressures are

P S O 3 = 4 3 k P a ; P o 2 = 5 3 0 P a a n d

P B O = vapour pressure of benzene at 20°C = 70 torr

P M O = vapour pressure of toluene at 20°C = 20 torr

Mixture is equimolar, XB = 0.5 and XM = 0.5

Total vapour pressure (PT) = 70 * 0.5 + 20 * 0.5 = 45 torr

Mole fraction of benzene in vapour phase ( x B ' ) = P B O X B P T = ( 7 0 * 0 . 5 4 5 ) t o r r

= 0.777 = 77.7 * 10-2 torr

Ans. = 78 (the nearest integer)
