Proper analysis of the exam: Before commencing your preparation, identify what exactly is asked in the exam, what it focuses on and what exactly is the pattern. UPSEE asks objective type questions which are application based and test thinking abilities.
Focus on your basics: You need to have extremely strong basics. If your basics are clear, you won’t face any sort of problem in answering questions. Majority of questions asked in the exam are based on the application of basic concepts.
Plan your preparation: Do not start studying in a chaotic manner. Considering the time left with you and the topics to be covered, chalk out the time available for each topic and then start studying accordingly. Planned study yields better results.
Practice is the only key to success: Once you are done with the theory portion of the syllabus, practice numerous questions based on application of the learned concepts. Practice is the only key to success. The more you practice, better it is. This also helps in improving the speed and one also gets to know the various ways of attempting a question.
Give equal importance to recreation: Limiting yourself within the four walls of the room won’t help. Instead it might have a negative impact on your productivity. Go for morning walks, take frequent breaks, and catch up with friends, family and relatives. This is important to regain the lost energy and it also helps in improving productivity.

For Karnataka Administrative Services, the pattern of examination will be preliminary followed by mains and personality tests for final selection.
The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers with objective type questions
Paper – I General Studies for 200 Marks and
Paper – II General studies for200 Marks
The main Examination consists of written examination which of conventional type with the following papers
Paper - I Kannada 150 marks
Paper - II English 150 marks
Paper – III & IV General studies 300 marks for each paper
Paper – V, VI, VII & VIII Two subjects to be selected from the list of optional subjects. Each subject will have two papers 300 marks for each paper
List of Optional subjects for Main Examination:
Agriculture, Agricultural Marketing. Co-operation and Sericulture. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences and Fisheries. Anthropology. Botany. Chemistry. Civil Engineering. Commerce Criminology. Economics. Electrical Engineering. Geography. Geology. History. Law. One of the following Language : a) Kannada b) English c) Hindi d) Urdu Management. Mathematics. Mechanical Engineering. Philosophy. Physics. Political Science and International Relations. Psychology. Public Administration. Rural Development. Sociology. Statistics. Zoology. However, Candidates will not be allowed to offer the following combination of subjects in the main examinations:-
(a) Political Science and International Relations and Public Administration.(b) Commerce and Accountancy and Management.(c) Anthropology and Sociology.
(d) Mathematics and Statistics.
(e) Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences.
(f) Of the Engineering Subjects viz., Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering not more than one subject.
(g) Economics and Rural Development and Co-operation.
(h) Agriculture and Rural Development & Co-operation.
The choice of subjects shall be based on the above criteria and your convenience, confidence and ease of preparation
The Commission calls for personality test, at the ratio of 1:5 based on the number of vacancies in the order of merit on the basis of the results of the main Examination, taking into consideration the vacancies reserved for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. Personality test carries a maximum of 200 marks.
