If you are not going to work during the gap period and only prepare for exams then you need to show that you were busy in other activities like internships, volunteering, short certificate courses etc. But if you are planning to take up a job then thats a good plan too.

It basically depends upon you category. If you are from general category and a Delhi resident, then a rank about 1lakh will get you a branch at least in DTU. Moreover you should qualify JEE Mains for branch of your choice.
