Let me clarify a basic concept of engineering.
Every industry has its own scope.one cannot compare.if you are best in your field then definitely you will be on top.
Now coming back to your question, Mechanical engineering is the base course, one of the core departments along with Civil Engg., EEE and CSE.
The course concentrates in all fields like thermal, design, production, automobile, aeronautics etc.
But production Engg is specialization, the course syllabus matches with Mechanical up to 25% and that of Mechatronics and Mechanical match up to 15%.
But production and Mechatronics have least possible similarity.
You may proceed with your interest in the disciplines.
