Art directors usually begin as entry-level artists in advertising, publishing, design, and motion picture production firms.
Artists are promoted to Art Director after demonstrating artistic and leadership abilities.

* Depending on their industry, art directors may have several years of work experience in graphic design, photography, illustration or other fields.
*Some art directors pursue a master's degree in fine arts or business administration to prepare for a leadership role.
There are several courses like PG diploma and certificates courses in art direction as well.
The eligibility criteria varies from institute to institute.
