Reading Comprehension is a very critical section of the CAT exam. I am using the word, 'critical' in the sense that students can score well if they approach RC in a systematic manner. Reading Comprehension is a mix of vocabulary, one word substitutes, idiomatic phrases, phrasal verbs and so on. There is a book written by Sujith Kumar, which will immensely help you in your preparation. The books starts with Level One, which is the basic level and gradually progresses to Level Four. You may have frequently heard the words, skimming and scanning, with reference to RC passages. There is only one proven method to increase your competency in RC and that is practice. You have to gradually increase your reading speed. In the book I have mentioned above, each RC passage has the total number of words and the maximum time allowed to read the passage and answer questions. You should be able to grasp the essence of the passage in the first reading. You have to practice keeping this as your goal
