There are lot of differences and lot of similarities. Private education was popular earlier and now distance education is more popular. Education taken from reputed distance education institutions like IGNOU, SMU, etc. add enough value to apply for both government and private jobs which also help working professionals to meet their HR requirements to get promoted in their organization. However, private education may not carry that much of importance as they offer such wide range of programs. Both are taken up part-time and full-time academic involvements are not required. Private degrees do not fall under distance education authority and you may receive the certificate from the board or university directly. Distance education mostly cater post high school and higher degrees while private offers from high school leaving level.

Candidates appearing for Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) will have an edge over those appearing for Management Aptitude Test (MAT) in terms of number of questions to be attempted and nature of test.
CMAT will have a total of 100 questions across 4 sections (25 questions for each section) that need to be attempted over 180 minutes. This gives candidates ample time to spend on a particular question or a section. However, candidates appearing for MAT will have to attempt 200 questions across 5 sections (40 questions for each section) that need to be attempted over 150 minutes. Since CMAT will be held for the first time, candidates can use the facility of Trial Test provided by AICTE to know the nature of paper.

To be eligible one needs to pass 12th in any stream. There is no age limit.
