Always keep your concepts clear in your core subjects, right now you are in 1st year so concentrate in making your base strong. Subjects like basic electronics, analog electronics, signals and systems, linear integrated circuits etc are important as per gate syllabus. Do practice everyday at least with 2 questions or topics of any of the mentioned subjects, including aptitude, logical reasoning and verbal communication. You can also join coaching for gate. To start with your core subjects, 4th semester will be suitable because you will get idea about your subjects and interests. I hope this is helpful for you.
