See everytime basis of marks shifts a lot, so exactly how mch marks you should score that totally depends on the advance you are appearing. But score around 50% should be enough.
Rank around 5000 (bottom mark) would be enough to get you enrolled in btech mechanical in ism. Rank around 6500 will get you in the electrical. These figures will be valid till ism is not upgraded to an IIT. After conversion figures may decrease as the branches are core. But if you are looking for mech or elec you should better prepare hard to get these in other higher ranked IITs. You can opt for mech here in ism, department is very good, well furnished. But

If you are appearing in these backs with your finals exams, you may definitely apply in good institutions but you must be sure you going to clear these backs. Few institutions also may allow you with confidential result of these particular backs, and you have to provide your final result i.e., DMC (marksheet) within 1 or 2 months. But in my opinion, you should drop for one year, so that, you'll have enough time for preparation of entrance exams.

Focus on 11th and 12th with that join some NGO and get involved in social activities because even if you got great academic performance, you can't make it there without social activity participation letter's certifications because universities abroad do give high weight age to social activities.
