As you have got a pretty low GATE Score it seems difficult to get through NIT, I would suggest you to try other state level Institutes or lower tier Private Institutes.

Hi, the difference lies in the importance of both. If you do your 10+2 through regular mode then you would get preference over the ones who would have done it through open source. Not Necessary, When you are preparing for GRE then concentrate on that itself.
If you are not confident about your score in GRE then you can think about giving TOFEL or IELTS.
