St. Xavier's is one of the prestigious and faithful brands. It is a huge value place and study pattern is awesome there. So, it is obviously a nice choice. St. Xavier's conducts an entrance exam to get the students from all the corners. You just need to clear that. Apart, from this I'll advice you to make a proper check of its study pattern, facilities, fee structure etc. Apart from Ranchi, you can also consider one in Mumbai or Kolkata.

Firstly, you need to cover your basics from NCERT class 6th - class 12th, then you can refer to the following books:
Ancient history- R s Sharma
Medieval history - Satish Chandra
Morden history - bipin Chandra/ spectrum
Geography - NCERT is sufficient
Polity - laxmikant
Economy- Sanjeev vermaa
Environment - Shankar ias
Science - lucent
Art and culture -nitin singhaniya
And one good book for state GK
Also read Hindu and monthly current affairs magazine to stay updated with the current happenings.
