I would say both are better, for one is incomplete without the other. When you see any movie online and if you ever happen to watch it through the credits, in the end, you will see that every movie will have animators/ 3D ARTISTS and VFX. So, certainly one needs the help of both of animation and visual effects. But by a large, the masses distinguish between the both by calling animation cartoon like and VFX as a real one. If you talk to any expert they will be able to give you an exact distinction between the two. But the core line remains that both support the production pipeline through the end. Captain America will lose its shield if there is no animation but it will also lose its powers without the VFX or hulk can never transform itself to big giants without animation, it will not be seen running around a realistic environment without VFX.
