1. A student who takes up Mass Communication has number of career options before him/her.
You can opt as a Copy writer if you wants to go into Advertising, a Journalist if you have a nose for news and Public Relations officer if you want to be the image builder of the company.
After completing the course in mass communication one can work as a copywriter, advertising professional, journalist, news anchor and a PR Officer and so on.
2. Opportunities for placement in diverse fields of mass communication are available in publishing houses, radio and television companies, corporate world, entertainment industry, media industry, advertising agencies, public relations agencies, government organisations etc.

I understand your confusion. Before doing any course it is very essential to assess the value of that course or the institute. The best way of doing this, is to gather information on important parameters such as recognition of the institute; course content; calibre of the faculty; structure of the course; infrastructure of the institute; the type of projects, research work or internships done by previous batches; the institute's tie-up or affiliations with the industry; placement record (where students from previous batches have got placed, what percentage were placed through on-campus placements, whether the college provides any guarantees on placements, what are the average starting salaries) etc. There are many sources of information for the above parameters, such as reviewing the institute's website, getting feedback from the industry, speaking to a faculty member from the institute, however the best way for getting the above information is to speak to current and past students who have done the course from that
institute.
Most of the Govt sectors, Advanced Technological(ISRO) etc, ask for MTech or ME graduates, since they feel these people are more resourceful than the normal BTech or BE graduates.
So you can always get placed in a better industry, than what you get for a BE.
But this doesn't happen usually because, people prefer to do MTech or ME nowadays, just because they don't get placed after doing their engineer undergraduate. So they feel if they do a masters, it will be helpful to get placement with the masters.
Doing MTech in a normal engineering college and doing them from IITs, IIS or NITs is a different thing and is like East and West they are at two different Ends.
You need to prepare for GATE or for relevant exams by these institutes and get a good score to get admission in to these institutes. The advantage of doing MTech from these are that as you are in your final semester you are likely to get placements and since these are recession times you may feel that to get a job is difficult but when you finish it may be after two years things wont be the same but will improve and you will get good placements.
Apart from private sector now jobs in the government sector is very lucrative and pay wise and resources wise they are at par with the private sector and they are secured and you will have a good career.
