Yes, anyone can give exam in whichever stream he is interested in GATE. There have been many people who have done this and excelled. In fact, there was a person from Mechanical engineering who had interest in software field, next what he did was appeared in GATE from CS branch and secured AIR 1 in GATE 2015. Although if your target is some PSUs and other recruitments through GATE then it could be a barrier to give GATE from other stream as opposed to your graduation stream. These companies have some branch specific criteria along with GATE stream paper which you have appeared in. Same goes for some courses in IITs & NITs. Hope this cle

For NRI the admission procedure is purely based on your 12th standard marks. They only take the percentage of physics, chemistry and maths. Then a list of students is prepared whoever has applied in the order of their percentage. If your merit number is in the beginning then you will mostly get the branch of your choice (1st option in your preference list). Even if your name is not in the 1st round, you do have a chance in round 2 because some students change their mind. Round 2 takes place at the spot and its the final round. There are 3 seats reserved for Gulf and 9 for NRI for all branches except mechanical which is 6-Gulf, and 12-N

You can ask for the same from your colleges and universities which you have shortlisted for particular course. I am in ct university, here eligibility criteria for MBA in healthcare and hospital administration is "Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university with atleast 50% marks"if we talk about entrance exam, some universities offers admission only on the basis of entrance test like CAT MAT etc. In some university you are eligible for direct admission on the basis of your marks. I think admissions are closed in most of the university and in some last days of admission are going on. I suggest you to take admission fast.
