The scope of civil engineering is huge not only abroad but also in India. Be it in terms of size of the industry or income. The primary reason being:
The starting pay of a civil engineer is much less than that of a, say, software engineer. And there is a good reason for it. Civil engineering is valued more on experience than that of knowledge, whereas other engineers are valued more on knowledge. The more experience you have, the more your value increases. Other fields on the other hand are pretty stagnant in terms of development with experience (compared to civil engineering)
The pay-scale of a civil engineer rises exponentially, but that of a software engineer, is almost close to constant. Take any experienced 'good' civil engineer for example. They will be earning much higher than their software counterparts. The major problem is when civil engineers get small pays in the beginning, most of them get de-motivated and un-interested in the field and try for other future options and then whine about civil engineering of how it destroyed their initial years. The key in civil engineering field is that work the hardest and learn the most in your initial stages and money will not be a problem at later stages. Civil engineering has an added advantage that we affect the lives of people directly, right from where they live to how they travel.
