Well, private institutes don't prefer to vacant their seats as they want to admit as many students as possible. So if any seat is vacant in any branch, what they do is they decrease the cut-off to that extent that the students with higher rank also get admission there. And, VIT is one of the reputed colleges of India so everyone who didn't get a good rank in JEE prefers it the most.

For admission into the mechanical branch of BIT-Sindri, you need a rank below 600 (and marks tend to change year by year). It basically depends upon the level of question papers but still on an average, a score more than 75 marks will land you into BIT-Sindri.
