Madras Medical College dates back to 1664 when it was founded as the Government General Hospital to treat the sick soldiers of the East India Company. In 1857 it got Affiliated to University of Madras
Its Department of Geriatric Medicine was established in April 1978 by Dr. V. S. Natarajan MD with the aim of providing comprehensive health care to senior citizens. In 1986, a separate ward for geriatric medicine was started for acute care and rehabilitation. The department offers an MD geriatrics course under affiliation with the Tamil Nadu DR. M. G. R. Medical University, Chennai. The Medical Council of India has recognised the course since its inception. The department has been approved as a training center for training doctors in the field of geriatrics by WHO and is currently upgraded as a Regional Geriatric Center under NPHCE by the Government of India.
