If you wish to pursue the degree just for gaining knowledge, you can go ahead with distance degree.
But if you wish to practice as a lawyer, then the part time education might not allow you for the same as per the rules of Bar Council of India.
However, if you are highly keen on taking a correspondence program, you can consider the below-

To become a Scientist, you need to pass Science in 12th. You need to have strong Maths and Science. You need to strengthen your fundamentals as these will be required throughout career.
To be a professor at a University you need to pass graduate (B.Sc) and post graduation (M.Sc) in Science field. Further, you may go for doctorate degree which will take 4 to 7 years approximately. You do research for another two to three years until you find a job. While studying doctorate, you are also doing research (usually).
