Well there are plenty of things you can do after studying English Literature. Careers in publishing require people with backgrounds in English very often. You can go into the fields of journalism, and translation; script/novel/play writing if you have a creative flair and an interest in writing. Education teaching, primary and secondary school children as well as professorship are also options after doing a Bed. or MPhil.
You can also get jobs with as reporters with newspaper firms and media companies. Content development and ITES firms also recruit English graduates. Apart from these job prospects, you can find career as campaign manager, speech writer and other positions that require the sophisticated use of written and spoken English.

The preparation requires the right approach along with the right study materials and strategy. The preparation requires focused study rather than plain hard work.
-So, stay focused.
-Follow a time-table.
-Keep sample papers handy to analyse your preparation.
-You may even join coaching center to work on your fundamentals.
-Be thorough with books like Ashish Gupta and Mudit Khanna, study at least the latest volumes. There is high chance that many aspirants will end up reading lot of books but in a non-complete and non-thorough way. And that can be really dangerous. So, if you are reading something, read thoroughly. As of now, your priorities should be the above mentioned books (Ashish Gupta and Mudit Khanna).
