There are various extra-curricular activities which human beings pursue and some of the things become so engrossed in these activities such that they make a career out of it, remember the photographer in 3 idiots movie. So, you could never say that it is a waste of time.

First of all MBA is not a high pressure program, it's just you have you push your limits a little and participating in extracurricular activities is never a waste of time. In schools also when we participate in extra activities, we learn something new every time. It adds up to our skills only. So, it would never be a waste of time. It depends on the students how he or she manages his or her task. MBA is all about how a person manages his/her work and completes the assigned task effectively and efficiently. That's what we learn in management.
Extracurricular activities add up many qualities to our skills like participating in extra acti

MBA is tough to pursue, no doubt, but it is also said that if you are free in your first year of MBA, you are not doing it right.
So, the answer to this question depends totally on what extracurricular activities you are opting for.
Also, there are 3 broad categories of things you can do while pursuing MBA:
    1) Academics
    2) Extracurricular
    3) Sleep (of course).
You can opt only for 2 out of these 3 broad categories. Now, it is your choice which you want to go for.
Highly career-oriented students generally go for academics + extracurricular. Extracurricular activities give you better insights of what is going around you. If you enrol for

First, not all extracurricular activities are a waste of time. We should know the difference between good and the bad waste of time. Yes, there is something called the good waste of time. Here we are considering wasting time=not working. So, extracurricular activities are a waste of time. What about recharging? Resting? Learning? These activities help us in doing our work efficiently. If you take a nap and go back to work, you would be refreshed. There may be no immediate return, but there may be benefits in the future.
What I am indicating to is activities that take up time, but have some possible positive value. Activities that teach

    1) Punctuality
    2) Discipline
    3) Team work
    4) Ways to manage studies and different activities
    5) Ways of handling work pressure
