Common Admission Test is a national-level management aptitude test that a candidate must appear in for admission to the Master of Business Administration courses offered by 20 Indian Institutes of Management and over 1,200 Business-schools in India.
Over two lakh applicants apply for the Common Admission Test exam every year, conducted in the computer-based mode for two hours.
The Common Admission Test exam syllabus comprises Quantitative Ability (QA), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC).
The difficulty level of the exam is moderate to high. Apart from Master of Business Administration programs, the Common Admission Test score is valid for admission to Executive Master of Business Administration, Ph.D., and Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) programs of Indian Institutes of Management and other Business-Schools.
CAT Eligibility Criteria 2023
1- Academic Qualification for CAT: Engineering Degree like a Bachelor of Technology
Affiliation Required: Recognized by MHRD or AICTE
Pass Percentage Required: 50 percent for General, EWS, NC-OBC, and 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
2- Academic Qualification for CAT: Bachelor's Degree in any stream from any university or board.
Affiliation Required: recognized by UGC.
Pass Percentage Required: 50 percent for General, EWS, NC-OBC, and 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
3- Academic Qualification for CAT: Students in their final year of a bachelor's degree or equivalent are also eligible to take the CAT exam.
Affiliation Required: Continuing graduation from University Recognized by MHRD, AICTE, or UGC.
Pass Percentage Required: 50 percent for General, EWS, NC-OBC, and 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
4- Academic Qualification for CAT: CA, CS, ICWA, and Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of India (FIAI).
Affiliation Required: Certification granting organization.
Pass Percentage Required: 50 percent for General, EWS, NC-OBC, and 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
CAT Eligibility Criteria for General and Non-Creamy Layer-Other Backward Groups:
1- The students must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a university or educational institution recognized by the GoI.
2- The students must have scored a minimum of 50 percent aggregate in graduation in any stream.
3- Students must be in their final year of graduation or awaiting the result.
4- Students must have professional degrees like CA, CS, or ICWA with a minimum of 50 percent aggregate.
CAT Eligibility Criteria for SC, ST, and PwD persons:
1- Students belonging to SC, ST, and PwD categories must have scored a minimum of 45 percent aggregate in graduation in any stream.
2- Students must be in their final year of graduation or awaiting the result.
3- Students must have professional degrees like CA, CS, and ICWA with a minimum of 45 percent aggregate.
Other Equivalent Degrees CAT Eligibility Criteria:
1- In case the marking scheme of any candidates bachelors degree is in grades or Cumulative Grade Point Average, the percentage of marks would be calculated based on the practice as followed by the respective University or Institution.
2- If any University or Institution confirms that they do not follow any scheme for converting Cumulative Grade Point Average into marks, the calculation will be done by dividing the candidate's Cumulative Grade Point Average by the maximum possible Cumulative Grade Point Average and multiplying the result by 100.
There are six situations under which a student is not eligible to apply for the Common Admission Test exam listed below.
1- If the student has not scored 50 percent in graduation for the general category and 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD students.
2- Students who do not have either a bachelor's degree or any professional degree like CA, CS, and ICWA.
3- Students whose two years average in bachelor's degree does not make up 50 percent for the general category and 45 percent for SC, ST, and PwD students.
4- Students who are not in the final year of their bachelor's degree.
5- Students who have not completed professional degrees like CA, CS, and ICWA.
6- If the student's bachelor's degree is not recognized by UGC, AICTE, and MHRD-Govt.
CAT Reservation Criteria:
There are no reservation criteria for the Common Admission Test exam apart from a 5 percent relaxation of marks in graduation for SC, ST, and PwD students. However, the Indian Institutes of Managementfollow reservation criteria fixed by the Government of India.
For Schedule Caste: 15 percent (Percentage of Seats Reserved)
For Schedule Tribe: 7.5 percent (Percentage of Seats Reserved)
For NC-OBC: 27 percent (Percentage of Seats Reserved)
For PwD: 5 percent (Percentage of Seats Reserved)
A person with Benchmark Disability (PwD) in CAT:
Persons with benchmark disability means a person with not less than forty percent of a specified disability as specified in the Schedule of the RPwD Act 2016. Given below are disabilities that fall under the Common Admission Tests PwD category:
1- Blindness and low vision
2- Deaf and hard of hearing
3- Multiple disabilities from amongst persons under clauses (a) to (d).
4- Autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and mental illness.
5- Other 'specified disabilities' mentioned in 'The Schedule' of the RPwD Act 2016.
6- Locomotor disability includes dwarfism, cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, acid attack victims, and muscular dystrophy.
