Pretoria / Jo'burg and Cape Town are most expensive and popular cities. English is the most widely spoken lnaguage. Local transport ticket in a bus would cost around 12 Rand, getting a monthly pass is worth 400 Rand. While a reasonable meal may cost something around 50 rand
a mid-range restaurant may cost 300 Rand. Cities like Cape town and Durban and Johannesburg boast of some well-known Indian eating joints like Maharaja Restaurant
if planning to rent your own accommodation the prices may range from 4000 to 5000 Rand for a 1-2 BHK flat, which can be shared amongst flat-mates to share the load.

South Africa is very similar to India in terms of the culture and people. So, settling in was not really a huge problem. In addition, English is spoken widely so that removes any language barrier to speak of. Local people are very warm and friendly and put you at ease almost immediately. The cost of living depends completely your lifestyle.

Costs will depend to a large extent on the lifestyle an expat is looking for. Essential costs can be greatly reduced by your choice of area and managing your expectations and budget carefully. Transport can be an important factor for expats as owning and maintaining a car can be expensive, but is often a necessary part of living in sparsely populated areas away from public transport.

South Africa is the most popular study abroad destination. Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are popular destinations in South Africa, Luckily, compared to many of the other possible study abroad destinations, living cost still remain relatively affordable for students in South Africa. As an added benefit, students have options when it comes to finding affordable accommodation.
