What is the history behind SAT?

<p>SAT exam history dates back to 1926, where the exam contents evolved from an Army IQ test. It was conducted by the non-profit organisation - College Board, which is still the official adminstrator of the SAT exam. The exam was designed to test the meritocracy of the applicants applying for colleges in the US from high school irrespective of their previous academic backgrounds. The SAT exam in 1926 tested applicants on Arithmetic, Logic, Reading, and certain Definitions of terms which was taken by 8,000 students. Seeing the importance of SAT in 1926 and its rising use, in 1935 &lt;a href="https://www.shiksha.com/studyabroad/usa/universities/harvard-university"&gt;Harvard University&lt;/a&gt; made it mandatory for all its applicants to submit SAT scores for admission.&nbsp;</p><p>Since SAT was required at almost all major US universities, more than 80,000 students took SAT by 1951, increasing to 1.7 million by 1971. Sentence completion (which is currently obsolete) was introduced in 1994. In 2005, SATs again saw a radical change, aligning it more with the curriculum of high school after &lt;a href="https://www.shiksha.com/studyabroad/university-of-california-articlepage-181939"&gt;University of California system&lt;/a&gt; critocised it. Over time, the SAT has witnessed multiple changes till date, mostly from 2005 onwards. In 2021, &lt;a href="https://www.shiksha.com/studyabroad/what-is-sat-subject-test-articlepage-1763"&gt;SAT subject tests&lt;/a&gt; were discontinued and in March 2023, the &lt;a href="https://www.shiksha.com/studyabroad/everything-you-need-to-know-about-sat-articlepage-1919"&gt;Digital SAT&lt;/a&gt; came into picture.&nbsp;</p>
