National Institute of Technology, Silchar is one of the top-ranked Engineering institutes in India. The institute has been ranked 40th in the Engineering category and 83rd in the Overall category by the NIRF 2023. Additionally, it has been ranked 22nd in the Engineering (Government) category and 32nd in the Engineering category by India Today 2023. NIT Silchar is ranked by several international organisations as well. The institution is ranked 106th in the Southern Asia category and 401-450 in the Asia category by the QS World Ranking 2024.

NIT Silchar is ranked 40th among all engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2022. NIT Silchar has been ranked 40 by NIRF 2023 in the Engineering category and 83 in the Overall category. Moreover, the National Institute of Technology Silchar was also declared as an Institute of National Importance. Additionally, the institute is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
