CAT is national-level MBA entrance examination conducted by one of the IIM on a rotational basis. Admission to IIMs is a two-stage process. The first stage is based on CAT score. Candidates who clear CAT are called for GDPI. Selection is based on CAT score, GDPI performance, and academic records. The minimum eligibility criterion for admission in MBA is at least a 3-years Bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university with at least 50 percent marks or equivalent (45 percent for SC/ST or persons with disability (PWD) category).

CAT is a computer-based test that evaluates candidates quantitative, verbal/reading, data interpretation, and reasoning skills. The syllabus of CAT has remained more or less the same for the last decade but the paper pattern has changed a little. Before we try to understand the complete and detailed CAT syllabus for the CAT 2019, we need to understand its pattern. Once we know the pattern of the paper, it would be simpler for us to understand the syllabus for CAT. The pattern for CAT has remained more or less the same for the past 3 years CAT 2016, CAT 2017, and CAT 2018. CAT exam paper has 100 questions; each question carries 3 marks, all Multiple Choice Questions. Also, for every wrong answer there is negative marking (-1 mark). Total Time duration is 180 minutes. The main subjects in CAT are number system, algebra, arithmetic, modern maths and geometry & mensuration (these are under Quantitative section).
