A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic and simple in form, and it conveys the owner's intended message. A concept or meaning is usually behind an effective logo, and it communicates the intended message.

Basic research on the theme is very important to begin the logo designing. After the research it is necessary to work on the lines. Then comes color and image.

A logo can be said great when it has creativity on one hand and can be easily understandable by everyone on the other hand. The main purpose of the logo is to communicate the purpose of the product and therefore, utmost care should be taken while designing a company's logo.
The other aspect to be considered while designing a logo is:
It should contain a minimum number of colours which makes it very handy to print. Lesser the colour count better the clarity.

I think the most important thing that should be kept in mind while designing a logo is that it should connect with the target audience because, if the company logo is not able to connect with the consumer, the brand will loose its identity over a period of time.

The main thing that should be kept in mind while designing any modern logo is simplicity. Bling, bling logos and design are now outdated. The world is moving towards simpler design.
