What qualities and skills should one possess to become a proof reader?

Hello, It’s a myth that the job responsibility of a proof reader is only limited to the grammar check of written documents. But now the work profile of a proof reader is not just limited to this field but also for beyond and to be very soundful on the expectations of the employer you must have certain skills:(#) Good Command over language: Either you want work in English documents or for any regional language, you should to have very good knowledge of that language from every aspects viz., local language and professional language. (#) Various Software and Online tools: There are large number of software (or you can say app or tool) available online to give a great extent of help, especially for proof readers.

A proofreader performs a 'quality check' on publications, usually just before they are due to go to print. Proofreading is a very important element of producing a great written document, and it needs a great deal of knowledge and patience to proofread a document effectively. A proofreader looks scrutinizes a written document in order to identify and rectify grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary errors. People need proofreaders in order to be sure that their work does not contain any mistakes and so it forms a fundamental part in writing. Proofreaders must have certain important skills to do their work efficiently. Some of them are: 1) A clear approach to detailed work. 2) A high level of skill in written English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. 3) An ability to stay focused throughout an entire document, which may be long and technical. 4) Good judgment skills in order to rewrite the work. 5) An ability to work within the style of the author and publisher, rather than impose their own ideas. 6) Good interpersonal skills, to build working relationships. 7) Patience, passion and dedication towards the work.

Reading the proofs and suggesting the changes what the Proofreader has to do. It is more of an editor’s job, but slightly less sophisticated and less paid as well. Editing and Proof Reading of Language Content is related to office communication and do have jobs with the government. However, this must be noted and should be known before an answer is supplied to this question, whether one is doing a degree in the subject or merely a Diploma. Company Secretary and Office Secretary also need the skills taught in the purview of the course mentioned. The Profile of a Proofreader is developed while doing a degree in Language (English or any other targeted). Proofreading is not available as a common course in India but is developed as a skill through regular usage of this thing. Jobs are available in the publishing industry as well as in the Newspaper media.Copy Editing is also a similar profile and shares the same essentials.
