Which are the top IITs in India and why?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)to rank institutions, including each IIT college, across the country on parameters which broadly cover Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception. Further, the ministry informed that nearly 705 of the research output in the country came from these institutions, while the top 100 academic institutions of the country accounted for nearly 80% of the output. But, IIT rankings change every year based on teaching, resources and placements. NIRF do this job for HRD. Current ranking is - IIT madras - IIT Bombay - IIT Kharagpur - IIT Delhi - IIT Kanpur - IIT Roorkee - IIT Guwahati One more thing ranking of college doesn't mean its best. Many other colleges are best in their own field. For example, it's better to do petroleum engineering from UPES Dehradun rather than doing it from somewhere else.
