Hi,
A new career, quite popular in western countries, is sports management which is a mix of sports and marketing or business.
Nowadays, there is so much money in sports that all the successful and well-known players have their own personal agents or managers. Even new entrants have started employing managers to look after their career. As a sports manager or agent, you will be responsible for player's schedules, career progression, business promotion, media and public relations. The administrative aspects like budgeting, finance and other logistics would also be your responsibility. To put it more precisely, sports management combines work as an agent together with the business and marketing aspects of the sport.
The job of a sports administrator involves planning and management of sports activities and events from time to time. There are many private and government- sponsored sports institutions which employ qualified persons to manage their work at various levels. It has been seen that these officials have been sports teachers and coaches. In case of leisure and sports-club management, you are expected to handle administrative work, including that of managing accounts, planning, preparing schedules and timetables and arranging for the specialized coaches as per the requirement. These days, golf clubs, resorts, adventure sports and other leisure activity centers require trained professionals to look after and promote these sporting activities.
To do a post graduate diploma course in sports management, you should have a graduation degree with at least 40 percent marks. If you have done your graduation in Physical Education (P.Ed.) or related course in a particular sport of your liking, it will give you an extra advantage. Presently, there are only two recognized universities which offer Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM). They are-
(a) Alagappa University, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, which offers a one-year PGDSM and
(b) Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science, New Delhi, which also offers one-year PGDSM. Notification for admission generally comes in the month of June and last date for submission of forms is in July every year.
I hope this information will be beneficial to you.
