Both mining and petroleum engineering are good and depends on your interest. But finally at the end, one looks for a good placement after completion of the degree. Based on this criteria, petroleum engineering is better than mining engineering. The prospects for getting jobs in mining engineering is limited and even growth aspects after a few years of experience may be limited. But petroleum engineering has got better prospects - be it offshore oil and gas production platforms, onshore oil and gas production facilities, oil refineries, petrochemical plants, gas treatment, compression and distribution companies etc. And could be in design, production operations and projects. One has good prospects of changing jobs with higher salary once you grow up the ladder since the oil and gas industry is huge. So the better is petroleum engineering.
