Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC is one of the most competitive examinations. As per some research cracking Civil Service Examination to get IAS or IFS or IPS is world's toughest examination to join civil services across world. Cracking Civil Services requires lots of planning, preparations and hard work. It does not make any difference which subject you choose for cracking the examination. In order to crack civil services examination candidate must choose his subjects based on his or her strength area.
If your strength area is science subject such as physics, chemistry or maths, etc., it will be difficult to change to huma

You should have proper knowledge of your optional subject for the preparation of UPSC exam. Whichever degree you choose hardly affects your preparation but choosing BA endeavours the knowledge of political science topics.

    Hey,
Well, there is no good or best as to when it comes to a degree to prepare for UPSC.
You need to have command over your optional subjects.
However, doing BA i.e. humanities helps you in the prelims as it includes history polity, etc. Rest, it has nothing else to do with preparations.
People having a BA degree may have an advantage if they have a subject which forms a part of UPSC syllabi.
Rest assured, you can start with any of the degree courses.

IAS is not everyone's cup of coffee.
Let's face the reality - what if you won't get selected?
What if you fail the examination?
You will all be shattered and be full of regrets as you were so sure that you didn't need a backup option. In 2013, Gaurav Agarwal was the topper. His background was B.Tech + MBA. So you see it doesn't matter from which field you are. The only thing that matters in this exam is your complete dedication and consistency. Now choose what you like and be wise. B.Sc isn't a bad option. You studied science for 2 years. Make them fruitful.

Among Bachelors in arts and Bachelors in science, Bachelor of arts is the best choice for cracking IAS exam as in BA course, almost all the subjects are just like a story which is easy to learn. But in B.Sc, there are many theories and practical parts which can't be learned easily. And during the exam, a student has to write it in her own words which are good for BA student. These graduates can write questions is the best possible way but a science graduate will face problem in it. In science graduation, there are more terms and chapters to read in comparison to BA course. Mean syllabus in science is big with respect to arts and humani

Honestly, according to the graph analysis of degree background related to IAS qualifiers, its a highly heterogeneous data, Degree in any stream hardly matters when it comes to pursuing IAS exam but yes if you wish to lower your burden to some 20% you may go for B.A. As that will help you make a basic interest and foundation to read subjects related to IAS exam in vast. But personally, IAS exam is not degree or stream or merit oriented; the pure mantra is long sitting hours, long reading hours and the retaining power!

IAS exam will test your overall knowledge so both BA and B.Sc are good, but I will recommend B.Sc as it will be rich in terms of knowledge.
