I think VIT Vellore is better than SRM Chennai, from SRM University it is now SRM institute of Science and technology because of no Research infrastructure. But yes SRM provides good sort of Placements. There are three campuses of SRM in Chennai area Kattankulathur, Vadapalani, Ramapuram.
-
Currently, SRM has approximately 20,000 student population in the Kattankulathur campus whereas VIT has a 24,000 student population at Vellore Campus. SRM is ranked 36 among universities ranked under the MHRD NIRF ranking and VIT is ranked top 18. VIT is also ranked No. 1 among Institutions under ARIIA 2019.

Both the universities are one of the best in India. You will be satisfied anywhere. Both are extremely reputed. SRM was also the best private university of India.
-
VIT is better among these two in every terms like training education and placements.
-
According to my view, VIT is better for you. VIT has good campus and better placements.
-
VIT-Vellore is better than SRM-Chennai, because VIT provides good course curriculum, good placements, good infrastructure and good computer labs, excellent faculty members, etc.

Both the universities are reputed and stand high in rankings of top engineering Institutes in India. But the difference comes when we talk about the training, placements and curriculum. VIT has a versatile curriculum where you don't need to study for the subjects, not at all related to your domain. Example, A CSE student doesn't need to study mechanical subjects. You don't need to make lab reports hand written for each lab. SRM makes you do all these things. I hope I answered your question. Best of luck.
