Why has the global rank of IIMs dropped over the last decade?

IIMs and IITs are really focused colleges and can't be compared to the US and European universities. Those universities house various departments which all come together to enrich the student experience. And, additionally due to the smaller size of the universities in India, they have low number of foreign students and faculty. Also, the research output is lesser than universities worldwide due to the focus on placements. But, in general the kind of students that enter and the faculty that teach are the smartest and most hardworking in the world. Also, both the institutions have good penetration in the network, and the students and research benefits from it. The ranks are for the one year MBA program of IIMs, and don’t represent the quality of their flagship PGP Course. Hence, I would say these rankings are not a good metric of assessing/comparing the quality of IIMs against other institutions.

India prides itself on its six-decade-long history of business schools but the colleges aren't making a good exhibition in global rankings. There is a decline in performance in several criteria, particularly in enrolling and employing international students and faculty members, which experts say holds back many of Indias finest colleges. A lack of work experience, coupled with a method of teaching that doesn't supplement textbook knowledge with hands-on experience, affects the employability of graduates which affects the rankings. Indian business schools still struggle with teaching techniques that go beyond blanket grading a student on an assignment and de-brief them on basic people interaction and management skills. Maybe these are the reasons of low rankings on a world level. We need to improve this.

As a matter of fact, the ranking of IIMs is not dropping. According to the Financial Times global MBA ranking, the ranking of IIMs and ISB has increased over the years. Comparing to the ranks in 2016 IIM-A's rank dropped a bit but ISB and IIM-B saw an increase in ranking. There are various factors considered while ranking colleges on a global scale. The problem is many of these factors are not given importance in IIMs (as a matter of fact in any college in India). Some of such factors are Research and Global Diversity. Research part has nothing to do with IIM but mostly to India as a whole. We aren't that research oriented people. We go to IIMs for getting a good job and a great pay. Apart from that research requires a lot of time and money to improve. So, it will improve but will take some time. About global diversity, it is not a fault of IIMs that foreign students aren't attracted to it. It is about the image of India among the foreigners. They still don't believe that India is a great developing nation. So, it is about the factors considered while ranking that keep IIMs a bit low in rankings. But if you consider factors like faculty and placements, IIMs are really good. Thank you.
