The energy of electron is present in its nth orbital of an atom with atomic number Z. When an electron is infinite distance from nucleus, it has zero interaction with nucleus. As it approaches to nucleus it interacts with nucleus, it does some work and releases some energy. Thus, the energy of the electron decreases and becomes negative.
